After being gunned down that way, the medal was the last thing he would pick, but it was the artificial soldier; the one who rescued him, she who picked the medal. A bit of a mystery why she did that; maybe she saw him before with it and thought it was important.
Thumbnail Sketch
The thumbnail sketch for this carried the main idea: the android soldier rescuing Captain Valdan from a gunship wreck, but this is one of those cases where the initial sketch was too vague. I realized that when it came to the middle sketch.
Middle Sketch
I first did this one, following the overall guide of the thumbnail, but it did not express or depict the scene that I had in my mind.
So I made a second middle sketch, now taking more liberty with the details and the framing but keeping the same idea.
Final Pencil Sketch
For the final pencil sketch, as usual, I grounded more details and also decided to take away those flames from the lower right corner. I was going to play with the light coming from the background so I didn’t need another source of light messing up things.
