This is a very special illustration, which depicts one of the most famous legends of my home country, El Salvador. The Cipe or “Cipitio,” is said to be the mischievous spirit of a cursed boy, who wanders the countryside causing all kinds of trouble. Stories are told of him doing naughty things like stealing fruit (specially bananas), eating the ashes of the woodfired stoves, or throwing pebbles at beautiful young women. And no, I haven’t drawn his feet wrong.

This is an illustration I’d been running away from for a long time. I usually don’t draw sceneries and landscapes, but I have to admit I really enjoyed this one. Here, Aurelio briefly reveals to Stella where that thing escaped in my short story “The Ishume Day”.
