This is a very special illustration, which depicts one of the most famous legends of my home country, El Salvador. The Cipe or “Cipitio,” is said to be the mischievous spirit of a cursed boy, who wanders the countryside causing all kinds of trouble. Stories are told of him doing naughty things like stealing fruit (specially bananas), eating the ashes of the woodfired stoves, or throwing pebbles at beautiful young women. And no, I haven’t drawn his feet wrong.
Here’s the first sketch I made, as it can be seen, not much changed since I really liked the composition and storytelling.
The working sketch only served me to add details and take more decisions about elements already there:
