This scene was originally conceived for the prompt word “BEAST” of last year’s Inktober, where three original characters were going on a quest to hunt a supernatural beast. Back in that year, I was writing a short story for each prompt-word, and this was probably the most ambitious of them in such a way that I couldn’t finish neither the story nor the illustration. But now it’s here.
This is the first exploration thumbnail sketch. The composition is far from original, as this is a very common scene on fantasy out there.

But my two cents for the illustration is what was going on the scene. The characters in the foreground were to have a connection to the castle/fortress in the background.

Truth be told, they were just looking, so I decided to vary the attitude of each character on the supposed final piece. But there was a problem, I got carried away using the markers, and that led me to have these flat areas and the splattered smoke.

This is why I decided to do it again, and now I was only going to use ink.

The final change I made, was that the smoke was not going to be the result of fire, but from something else.
